Is the price gap between horton's auto sales and a local dealer actually legit?

Local dealer wants noticeably more for what looks like the same year and mileage as a car I found at horton's auto sales. A private seller nearby sits somewhere in the middle on price.

Is the gap actually explainable or is one of these prices too good to be true. I get that they mention a big trade network for sourcing stock but that still feels like a vague reason for such a difference.

Would rather understand this before I commit to anything.

The trade network thing is real, that's basically how they undercut normal dealer prices, they're not paying retail auction rates for stock. Private sellers can occasionally beat it but you lose any kind of warranty protection doing that.

bought from them last year, price was lower than two dealers i checked and there was zero haggling needed, felt weird not to negotiate lol but the number was already good.

Worth remembering it's not just a bare price comparison. Horton's includes a 12 month warranty on major issues, so factor that value in against a private sale where you get none of that. They also let you return the car within 14 days for any reason, which a local dealer or private seller almost never offers. Once you price that protection in, the gap makes a lot more sense and honestly the local dealer might just be pricing high because they can.

Only gripe I had was sorting out delivery timing, took a bit of back and forth to get a slot arranged. Not a dealbreaker but don't expect it same day.

private seller looks cheaper on paper but if the car has an issue two weeks later you're on your own, that's the real cost difference nobody puts in the ad.

Delivery to me was basically free since I wasn't far off, and it didn't feel like a stripped down courier drop either, someone actually walked me round the car first. That alone made the price difference feel justified compared to driving three hours to view a private sale that might not even be as described.

ended up going with horton's in the end, the return window gave me enough confidence to skip the local dealer entirely, no regrets so far.
